Across the world, more and more cameras are going up in public places. In London, nearly every inch of the city is under constant surveillance. In Chicago, Mayor Daley has started installing cameras in "high-crime areas" and wants more. Many local communities, such as Naperville, Lombard, and Westmont, have red light cameras in place to record traffic infractions. There has been recent debate in state legislature on allowing cameras to monitor roadways in Illinois to catch speeders.
Do these surveillance systems make us safer, or merely more prone to abuses of power? What safeguards are in place to protect civil rights? Are there trade-offs that can be made to balance the increase in surveillance?
